Things to do in Westport this weekend
Updated 5:48 pm, Friday, February 24, 2012
The February school vacation week is wrapping up, so end things on a memorable note with these Westport activities:
Start the weekend with a Friday evening Art Cafe "Happy Hour" at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave. Here's how organizers describe the event from 6 to 7 p.m.: "a festive, art-themed Happy Hour. BYO beverage encouraged. Free and open to the public." Also, while at the center check out the playful -- and then some -- "Toy Stories" exhibit. For information, call WAC at 203-222-7070 or visit www. westportartscenter.org.
Catch a Friday performance of "A Thousand Clowns" by the Westport Community Theatre troupe. The show starts at 8 p.m. in Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave. The Herb Gardner play also will be staged at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday on this last weekend of its run. Tickets cost $18-$20. For information, call 203-226-1983 or check www. westportcommunitytheatre.com.
It's a double-barreled shot of '50s nostalgia as recorded by the screenwriters who lived in Westport during that era and some of the events that inspired them. The Westport Historical Society is showcasing two companion exhibits -- "Next Stop: Westport! The Inspiration for 1950s TV & Film Writers" and "The Cold War in Our Backyard" -- through April 30. The exhibits' hours on Saturday are noon to 4 p.m. The historical society is at 25 Avery Place; call (203) 222-1424 or visit www.westporthistory.org for details.
Unwind a bit Sunday with an outing taking advantage of this particularly balmy stretch of what has so far been an unseasonably warm winter. Even though Sunday is not supposed to be quite as warm as several days the preceding week, sunny skies in the forecast should make it ideal for hiking the trails at Earthplace, the nature preserve and environmental center at 10 Woodside Lane. The six trails through the 60-plus-acre sanctuary offer paths through varied terrain, which given the surprising warmth, could offer flora and fauna surprises along the way. Grounds are open 7 a.m. to dusk; for more information call 203-227-7253 or check www.earthplace.org.
Catch a bit of Oscar fever, Westport-style, Sunday afternoon in advance of that night's Academy Awards extravaganza by turning out for a party sponsored from 3 to 5 p.m. by the Westport Cinema Initiative at Shake Shack restaurant, 1849 Post Road East. The event will feature a Westport movie trivia contest and balloting on who the likely winners of this year's Oscars will be. In honor of the 84th stanza of the annual movie awards, the first 84 attendees will be given a "non-swag" bag from the Westport Cinema Initiative, a group working to bring a movie theater back to downtown Westport. Admission is free, but partygoers have to pay for their own food. For more information, check www.westportcinema.org.
