One in hospital after Westport beach incident

WESTPORT — One person is in the hospital and the search for a possible second swimmer has been stopped after a swimming incident at Sherwood Island Sunday.
State Environmental Conservation Police, State Police Troop G, Westport’s Marine Dive Team and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter searched for a possible second swimmer on the evening of July 31 but ended the search when no one evidence of another victim was found.
DEEP spokesperson Cyndy Chanaca wrote said Sunday night police found no second swimmer and received no missing person reports.
A bystander pulled Shuja Nagi, 31, of Bronx, N.Y. from the water on Sunday evening, according to a state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection press release. State EnCon Police responded around 5 p.m. to a call that a swimmer was unresponsive at the beach. Nagi was taken to Norwalk Hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Fairfield and Westport police were also on the scene during the search for the second swimmer
DEEP’s police unit is continuing to investigate the incident.
