Water lovers, take note of the waterfront retreat at 26 Surf Ave. called Villa Porto in Westport's Saugatuck Shores area.

The European-inspired, white stucco villa sits near the tip of a quiet cul-de-sac on a peninsula where Bermuda Lagoon meets Cockenoe Harbor.

The Mediterranean-style house incorporates many Cote d'Azur features and it has views of and immediate access to Bermuda Lagoon in the backyard and Long Island Sound from front yard. The house enjoys a deep-water dock on the lagoon side.

Although the neighborhood experienced flooding during Tropical Storm Irene, the home was not damaged, the listing agent said, and two open houses are scheduled this month.

Built in 2005, this 16-room mansion is a remarkable site for private, romantic living as well as upscale entertaining. It features two roof-top terraces, a patio, a spacious gourmet kitchen, a wet bar and a dumb waiter, which services all three floors of living space as well as the main roof-top terrace.

There are attractive views from various rooms throughout the 5,500-square-foot house, but a panoramic view awaits those who climb up to the two roof-top decks or terraces, from which to enjoy the water views, gaze at the stars, take in sunrises and sunsets, and hold roof-top soirees. From the terraces, the 360-degree view includes the Saugatuck River, the Sound, the lagoon, and Norwalk lighthouse.

The roof-top terraces are accessed from the third floor, which contains the master bedroom suite. "Your view just gets better the higher you go. The terraces are like a vacation spot at home," said one person, who knows Villa Porto well. In fact, the whole of the house and property is like a year-round vacation destination.

The formal front entrance is dramatic even before crossing the threshold. The front yard is reminiscent of European gardens, but instead of plants the patterning is done with decorative stones. The foyer has its own dramatic flair with its terra cotta flooring and decorative wrought iron railings that grace the split staircase.

On the first level there is an au pair or guest room, an open space for entertaining that includes a wet bar and three sets of doors to the backyard patio. There are also two rooms that share a full bath. One is currently used as a dining room but both could be bedrooms if necessary.

The main living level is on the second floor, which contains the cavernous gourmet kitchen, the living room, and two bedrooms. The living room has a limestone fireplace, two balconies, and a vaulted ceiling with a crown of wooden beams. The living room is large enough to include a dining room table without compromising the living space. Also included in the living room is a wet bar, beverage refrigerator and cabinets.

A blue tile backsplash and the seashell-themed door pulls on the kitchen drawers and cabinets are a reminder of the home's waterside setting. The kitchen features a farm sink, Wolf gas range with a pot-filler, and a sizable triangular center island.

Throughout the house there are several different kinds of stone, including honed slate, marble and limestone. The master bath has a double marble vanity. The floor of the large walk-in shower resembles river stones -- small, rounded and rubbed smooth from the action of the water. The master bedroom is on the Sound side of the house. It has a decorative limestone fireplace and a tray ceiling.

Open houses are scheduled On Sunday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 25, from 1 to 4 p.m.
