Art takes to Westport streets Thursday for the festive start of the annual Art About Town exhibition sponsored by the Westport Downtown Merchants Association.

The Art About Town street party, showcasing art on display in downtown stores and businesses for the next month, is set from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event, in addition to the art displays, will feature musical and street-art performances, interactive demonstrations and refreshments along Main Street, which will be closed to traffic.

Art About Town, with artworks on display through June 21, is an eclectic exhibit of works by local artists shown in more than 60 shops and restaurants throughout downtown. All of the artwork is for sale.

The street party will have music from the band Funky Dawgz Brass Band, whose members met while playing with the University of Connecticut marching band. The band gives performances and master classes to young musicians in elementary, middle and high schools across the state to promote music education, according to publicity for the event.

There will also be music by two groups from the Youth Arts Forum and dancers from the Westport/Weston Family Y, the Dance Collective and Neighborhood Studios.

Street performers will meander up and down Main Street, while artists demonstrate their talent and explain their process and inspiration.

Westport Arts Center's art educators will present an interactive art experience for all ages, Funky Pattern Signs. Visitors will be invited to create small wall signs using colors and patterns of their choosing, embellished by buttons, beads and foam shapes.

Rain date for the Art About Town street party is May 28.

Representatives from local nonprofit organizations will be available to discuss their missions, according to the Merchants Association.

The party will also mark the first anniversary of "Tunnel Vision," the art installation in the pedestrian passageway between Main Street and Parker Harding Plaza. The association and Win Properties collaborated on the project to refurbish the tunnel, with work by local artist Miggs Burroughs.
