Stephen G. Roberts

Stephen G. Roberts, a teacher at Staples High School in Westport, died Aug. 29, 2010.

Born Burlington, Vt., on Dec. 12, 1966, he was a resident of the state shoreline town of Stony Creek, and taught physics and aerospace at Staples. He previously taught at East Haven High School. He had graduated from Drexel University and earned a master's degree in teaching from Southern Connecticut State University.

Roberts had a wide range of interests and friends. His activities included rock climbing, sky and scuba diving, traveling, yoga, hiking, board games and foods. He was also a member of MENSA.

But family, friends and the Stony Creek community were the most important things in his life.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Giordano Roberts of Stony Creek; his sons Nicholas E. Roberts, Alexander J. Roberts, Jacob T.E. Roberts and Samuel S. Roberts, all of Stony Creek; his parents, Earl G. and Janne Breer Roberts of Middletown; a brother, Gregory (Norma) Roberts of Houston, Texas; sisters, Lisa (Wayne Woods) Roberts of Lexington, Mass., and Julie (Jim) Hipke of Manchester, N.H.; his maternal grandmother, Kathryn Breer of Barre, Vt.; in-laws Tom and Pat Giordano of Bloomfield, Peggy Maier and Joe DaGrosa of Guilford, Suzanne Giordano of Meriden, and Lori (Rick) Bennett of East Haddam, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday in Stony Creek Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. in Church of Christ, 192 Thimble Island Road, Stony Creek. A reception to follow immediately after in the church's Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Roberts Boys Trust, c/o the W.S.
