To look at the sprawling colonial at 11 Steep Hill Road in Weston, it's difficult to imagine its humble beginning as a horse barn in the 1700s and then in the 1920s as a modest cottage.

Today, the house has 13 rooms and 7,263 square feet of living space, the result of a major rebuilding and expansion by its current owners, who have lived there since 1992. One of the current owners, who did much of the work himself, called the construction project "a 20-year labor of love." He employed his own green concept, "re-using the land."

Only one wall of the horse barn remains part of the existing house, but the land is well represented in the construction. The owner reclaimed wood from trees on the two-acre property to use for much of the flooring and many of the walls, and the five-foot stone walls that border the front and one side of the property were built from stones and rocks that came from the grounds. He logged the trees, brought them to a lumber mill on Route 7, slabbed, aged and kiln-dried them before incorporating them into the house.

The cavernous "ballroom" over the rear garage, which could serve as a media or play room, has red oak flooring. The finished third floor, which could be an office or art studio space, has pine on the walls and random-width white oak flooring. This third floor space also has an exercise area, a section of floor covered in tumbled marble and a balcony or sitting porch above the front entrance.

Several of the numerous closets throughout the house have red cedar walls, and the floor of the guest cottage has hemlock floors.

The ballroom is not the only dramatic space involving this house. It begins from the moment one travels through the stone columns of the gated property at one end of the circular driveway with the view of the 20-foot columns at the front entrance with its slate porch floor.

In between, there are five bedrooms on several different levels, affording a great deal of privacy for all, a spacious formal living room with a fireplace and decorative crown molding, and an architecturally attractive gourmet kitchen, breakfast room and dining room.

The breakfast room and kitchen have limestone counters. The kitchen also has a large, two-tiered center island topped with black granite, a fireplace, farm sink, Viking gas range, marble fireplace with a raised hearth, a sitting area and French doors to the large wooden deck. The breakfast room has a wet bar and a beverage refrigerator. Both rooms have custom-designed cabinets and exposed beams.

The master bedroom suite has a large walk-in closet with a sitting area and a master bath with tumbled marble floor and backsplash and surround of the jetted tub. There is also a steam shower and a water closet.

One of the main features of the house, particularly for a vintage car collector or mechanic, is the heated and air-conditioned garage space. There are two garages, front and rear, with seven bays, but with space for eight vehicles. The ceilings are tall enough to install lifts, and the garages have their own separate HVAC zones.
