They are withholding the driver's identity pending further investigation by the Western District Major Crime Squad.
A 52-year-old Broad Brook woman, Janine Wheeler, was killed when the sports utility vehicle she was riding in was hit by another car near Exit 2 westbound about 7 p.m..
State police arrested the driver of the car that hit the Wheeler vehicle, John Morales, 23, of the Bronx, but had been seeking the red pickup, which witnesses told police was also weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed along with Morales' car.
Morales was charged with first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, as well as other charges.
Police ask witnesses or anyone with information about the accident to call Troop A in Southbury at (203) 267-2200.
