The Staples softball team had a reason to smile on Senior Night at Greens Farms Elementary.

For five innings it appeared the Wreckers would fall to New Canaan for the second time this season, but the bats woke up in a big way.

Erupting for eight runs in the final two innings, Staples topped the Rams 8-3 on Tuesday night and eliminated them from FCIAC playoff contention.

Freshman pitcher Cat Connell started the game and went five innings while senior Emily Lustbader closed it out. New Canaan loaded the bases with 2 outs in the top of the seventh with the score 8-3, and after a visit to the mound she recorded a strikeout.

New Canaan led 3-0 in the sixth, but Lustbader, Maddie McGarry and Connell had RBI hits to make it 5-3. Gillian Birk then socked a two-run triple, and Lily Toffel singled in Birk.

Staples had 11 hits total.
