A Staples High School senior is among approximately 2,200 winners of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships this year, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced Wednesday.

Jake A. Atlas was awarded the National Merit Northwestern University Scholarship. He will be studying engineering, according to the news release.

Officials of each sponsoring college selected scholarship recipients from among the finalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship, according to the news release.

An additional group of National Merit scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2015 competition to approximately 4,100.

This year, 184 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 107 private and 77 public institutions located in 44 states and the District of Columbia.
