Staples runs over Warde to remain perfect

WESTPORT — The Staples running back tandem of Connor Adrian and Ethan Burger has yet to be stopped this season. Combined with quarterback Andrew Speed, the trio came into Week 3 averaging more than eight yards per carry.
The Wreckers continued their early-season dominance on the ground, rushing for four touchdowns in a 35-15 win over Fairfield Warde on Friday night to improve to 3-0.
The offensive line set the tone early and often, creating gaping holes that Adrian and Burger had no problem hitting.
“If we can clean up the penalties and get some sort of rhythm, I think we can be pretty good,” Staples coach Marce Petroccio said. “Tonight we really dominated both lines of scrimmage; we feel like we’re playing pretty well up front.”
Burger rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns in the first half before exiting as a precaution with a minor hamstring injury.
Adrian picked up right where Burger left off, taking his first carry of the second half 55 yards for a score. Adrian would also end up with more than 100 yards as the Wreckers built a 28-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
“It’s great having another runner like that next to me,” Adrian said. “If the defense keys on me then he goes off, and if the defense keys on him then I’m able to go off. It’s a one-two punch.”
Burger’s first touchdown run came on a 48-yard scamper in the first minute of the game to give Staples a 7-0 lead. The Warde defense stiffened until early in the second quarter, when Burger scored from one yard out to give the Wreckers a 14-0 lead.
A third touchdown from Burger gave the Wreckers a 21-0 advantage at halftime.
The Mustangs got on the board late with a pair of touchdowns that ended the Wreckers’ scoreless streak at seven quarters. Bryan Azarian gashed the Staples reserves for an 80-yard touchdown, and quarterback Jack Potenza hit Clayton Mitchell for a pass in the end zone with seven seconds left.
“It’s a tough night and a tough team to play against,” Warde coach Duncan Dellavolpe said. “If we can get gelling up front a little bit more (Azarian) can do a lot of that.”
Staples’ Sam Arciola returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown after Azarian’s score got the Mustangs to within 28-8.
The Wreckers visit McMahon next Friday night while Warde (0-3) will look for its first win of the season against Wilton.
