The Staples girls basketball team continued its strong start to the season with a 54-41 win over Manchester on the road Monday afternoon to improve to 5-1 this winter.

Another balanced offensive attack paved the way for the Wreckers, who got 11 points and eight rebounds from Olivia Troy and seven points from Gabby Perry, Rachel Seideman and Julia Brower.

After a four-day break folloinwg a win over Danbury, the Wreckers will get another week off before hosting Trumbull Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. The game will start a stretch of three straight (Stamford, Ridgefield) against likely FCIAC playoff teams.

The Staples-Weston-Shelton (2-1) hockey team dropped its first game of the season, 5-3 to Division II squad Hand on Monday at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, but the Tigers exploded for three in the second to take control of the game. A goal by Ryan Johnson with 4:26 left in the game pulled the Wreckers to within 4-3, but Hand got an insurance goal late to preserve the win.

Sam New and Ian Offenberg also scored for Staples, which visits New Canaan Wednesday.
