The Staples boys cross country team already proved that it was the best in Connecticut by posting an undefeated regular season, and winning the FCIAC, Class LL and State Open titles. On Saturday at Ponaganset High School in Rhode Island, the Wreckers proved they were the best in New England.

Led by Zak Ahmad’s third-place finish, the Wreckers were crowned New England team champions at the meet Saturday. Staples (72 points) easily beat La Salle Academy (155) for the title.

Ahmad crossed the line in 15:31, 10 seconds behind runner-up Patrick O’Brien of New Hampshire and 10 seconds ahead of Tyler Marshall of Vermont. La Salle Academy’s David Principe won the race with a time of 15:14.

The Wreckers had a number of runners who placed in the top 50. Ben Seiple finished 17th overall with a time of 15:59, Will Landowne was 27th in 16:06 and Sunil Green was 29th in 16:08. Christian Myers finished 39th with a time of 16:18.
