The Staples boys cross country team continued its stellar start to the running season with an excellent effort competing against the top clubs from the entire northeast.

The Wreckers traveled to Wappingers Falls, New York for the Nike Northeast Regionals on Saturday, and almost came away with another gold medal in a fall full of them.

Competing under the Westport Harriers monicker, the club finished second to Christian Brothers (New Jersey) with 132 points, just 10 behind the winners. Senior standout Zak Ahmad finished sixth out of 309 runners that took on the five kilometer course with a time of 16:02.4.

Thanks to the finish, Westport will travel to Portland, Oregon to compete at the national meet on Saturday, Dec. 3.

David Principe Jr. — who won the New England race ahead of Ahmad earlier this month — won the race with a course record

Westport’s top five runners placed in the top 52 to earn the runner-up spot Ben Seiple took 19th with a time of 16:27.6, Sunil Green finished 31st in 16:40.08, Will Landowne was 40th in 16:46.3 and Christian Myers was 52nd in 16:51.3.

Staples swept the FCIAC, Class LL, State Open and New England championships during the season.
