Getting ready to "rink" in the new year, crowds glided onto the ice at the Westport Police Athletic League ice rink at Longshore on a cold but sunny Friday last week.

The rink drew skaters not only from Westport and nearby towns like Fairfield and Darien, but other county communities such as Monroe, hometown to Ryan Driscoll and his son, Parker, 4, and even as far away as Franklin, N.Y., where visitors Randy Cowles and daughter Hattie, 20, live.
