Westport's annual Sidewalk Sales launched Friday under sunny skies, with a bright outlook for bargain hunters through the weekend at dozens of merchants on Main Street and the Post Road.
The sales event, organized by the Westport Downtown Merchants Association, runs through Sunday.
"It's great," said Ann Radley of Westport, among the early birds who turned out Friday morning. "When you come early you find really nice things, though I'm sure you do all day."
"It's going great," said Emma Roth of LF Stores. "It was going great even before we opened. People were already coming by."
One concern, however, expressed by several merchants was that the Westport sales coincided with sidewalk sales in other nearby towns, cutting into the potential customer base.
"We wish it wasn't the same day as Greenwich and the other surrounding towns," said Niki Puglisi of The Brownstone.
Still, customers for the Westport sales were plentiful as of midday Friday.
"It's fun," said Marilyn Moran of Norwalk. "I always buy something, and the sales are great. It's just a fun day."
