The July 4th holiday, combined with the Thursday's hot and steamy weather, produced a big turnout at Sherwood Island State Park.

Too big, in fact -- at least according to the state Department of Transportation -- which closed the waterfront park in Westport to any more vehicle traffic as of about 9:30 a.m.

Thousands are already in the park this Independence Day, but given the early-hour shutdown, thousands more holiday makers will be disappointed to find it closed to additional admissions.

No word if the DOT may consider easing the ban later in the day.
