The Westport Public Schools have planned an orchestra festival for Wednesday evening, March 19, to showcase middle school and high school musicians.
The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Staples High School gym and will feature musicians in grades seven through 12.
The program is free.
Scheduled to perform are the combined seventh- and eighth-grade orchestras of Bedford and Coleytown middle schools, the Staples Symphonic Orchestra and Staples Sophomore Orchestra strings, the school department said in a news release.
Guest conductor will be Jonathan Yates, music director of the Norwalk Symphony and youth symphony programs. The Westport student musicians will have two rehearsals with him before the concert, the school department said.
Music performed by the Staples orchestras will include the "Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25," by Bizet-Sarasate, featuring Staples senior violinist Katie Zhou, according to the release. Also on the program is the "Danzon No. 2," by Arturo Marquez.
The combined middle school orchestras will perform a medley of short selections.
