Several children on a Weston school bus suffered minor injuries Monday morning after their bus struck a low-hanging tree branch on Lyons Plains Road in Westport, causing three windows to shatter and propelling debris throughout the passenger compartment.
The mishap took place just before 8:30 a.m. Monday when the Weston bus -- with 36 students on board -- struck the branch near the street's intersection with Tuck Lane in Westport.
When emergency crews arrived on the scene, eight of the students appeared to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All of the students were released to the care of either their parents or Weston school officials after being evaluated by emergenct medical personnel.
The injuries suffered by the eight students were described as "minor" in a statement from Westport EMS, such as scrapes, abrasions and minor contusions. The parents of all eight students came to the scene and refused transportation to a hospital for additional treatment.
Police, fire and EMS personnel from both Westport and Weston were dispatched to the scene. Lyons Plains Road at Riverfield and Coleytown roads was closed to traffic for less than one hour during emergency operations.
A staging area for parents of the students was set up at the nearby Unitarian Church on Lyons Plains Road.
