SUV skids off Merritt in Westport, strikes tree

An SUV skidded off the snow-slick Merritt Parkway in Westport and struck a tree during the first hours of the blizzard Thursday morning.

The driver of the Ford Escape SUV was injured in the accident, which took place about 10 a.m. Friday between northbound Exits 42 and 44, according to Westport firefighters.

Firefighters, Westport EMS and State Police were dispatched to the scene, where the vehicle was severely damaged, according to the report. The driver suffered leg and ankle injuries, and was transported by Westport EMS to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport.

The SUV's battery was disconnected and a fluid leak was cleaned up. The vehicle was hauled from the scene by the Westport Center Service.
