Last Saturday the Westport Parks and Recreation Department hosted the fifth race of the 2015 Road Runners series, a 4.7 mile run starting at Longshore Club Park. Matt Klein, of Trumbull, won his first Road Runners race of the season as he led 165 runners over the flat, scenic and certified course with the time of 24:44. Klein’s time, however, was well off the course record of 23:36 set by Fairfield’s Dave Peterson in 1983.
The first woman to finish was Eliza Tabacchi, of Weston, in 22nd place with the time of 32:00. Tabacchi’s time was also short of the women’s course record of 27:40 set by Cate Allen, of Fairfield, in 2014.
Second and third places in the men’s division in Saturday’s race were awarded to James Osborn, of Ridgefield, and Patrick Dennen, of Middlebury, with respective times of 26:48 and 26:51. Second and third places in the women’s division were awarded to Westport’s Emily Harris of Westport in 36th place, and Fairfield’s Gabi Galletta in 40th place, with respective times of 33:47 and 33:59.
The next scheduled Road Runners race will be held on Saturday, August 8 at 8 a.m. with a 5.85 mile race starting at Compo Beach.
