The Westport Parks and Recreation Department sponsored the first race of the 2015 and 53rd Annual Road Runners Program on July 4 with a 2.2 mile run starting at Staples High School. Romain Mareuil, of Washington, D.C., won his first Road Runners race as he led 178 runners over the old Staples Cross Country course with the time of 11:58.

Mareuil’s time, however, was well off the course record of 10:25 set by Roy Mascolino, of Westport, in 1986.

The first woman to finish was Southport’s Kristen Curren in 10th place with the time of 13:15. Curren’s time was also short of the women’s course record of 11:49 set by Keeri Lyons, of Wilton, last year.

Second and third places in the men’s division in Saturday’s race were awarded to Sam Cohen, of Westport, and Justin Lubeley, of Darien, with respective times of 12:05 and 12:14. Second and third places in the women’s division were awarded to Blythe Lewis, of Westport, in fifteenth place and Sarah Radziewicz, of Fairfield, in twenty-sixth place with the respective times of 13:40 and 14:29. Other Westport-Weston residents who finished in the top 10 were Paul Greenberg, seventh in 12:59, and David Allen, ninth in 13:08.

The next scheduled Road Runners race will be held on Saturday, July 11 at 8 a.m. with a 3.05 mile race starting at Longshore Club Park.
