SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah officials say one in 7 state residents older than age 5 speaks a language other than English at home.
The report uses information from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2009-13 American Community Survey and indicates that the linguistic demographics of Utah might be evolving rapidly. Other than English, the top languages spoken in Utah are Spanish, Chinese, German and Navajo. But more than 20 languages are commonly spoken in the state's homes.
Brittney Okada of the state Office of Health Disparities says she hopes the findings will lead to "effective and meaningful communication" in health services. She says language can be a barrier to getting appropriate health care.
