"We have new departments that no other Stop & Shop has," said Gerson, who has worked for the company for 24 years.
One of the additions that he thinks customers will enjoy is a new salad and sandwich bar where Stop & Shop cooks will grill chicken, shrimp and beef to add to salads or sandwiches for customers on the spot. There is also a new café inside the grocery store with Starbucks coffee and other Starbucks products for sale.
Almost every other department in the store has also been expanded or improved, Gerson said.
Renovations include an expanded area where customers can pick up prepared salads as well as a meat service case for choosing particular cuts of meats. The produce department has also been redone, and the offerings in natural food products have increased, now taking up the first two entire aisles in the store. The dairy department and the frozen foods department were also enlarged. It's a whole store makeover, he said.
In addition to the expansion of most food and product departments, the store's décor has also been updated from the floor to ceiling tiles, and the parking lot was upgraded as well.
Officials from Stop & Shop, headquartered in Quincy, Mass., were expecting to attend the store's grand reopening and ribbon cutting on Friday, Oct. 25, as were Westport's fire chief, fire marshal and selectmen. Food sampling, characters in costume and other entertainment are planned for the 10 a.m. opening.
It was a corporate decision to renovate the Westport store, which is a high volume store, Gerson said. Work started July 1, and all of the renovation was done on the interior without expansion of the store's footprint. "This has all been done within the four walls," he said.
"Customers are happy because when you walk into our store we have an upscale look now, and before it was an average look," the store manager said.
