Lineage Jazz and Voices Cafe present "Remembering Billie and Ella" -- a musical the explores the artistry of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald -- at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Voices Cafe in he Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plains Road.
A free music improvisation workshop for instrumentalists and vocalists with any level of experience will also be held from 2 to 3 p.m. that day at the café.
Nicole Pasternak's jazz quartet will highlight the music of the two legendary singers. The quartet will be accompanied by trumpet player Chris Brown. For this performance, Brown and Pasternak will partner to show how singers and horn players interact in jazz, playing off one another in a "musical dance" as they share the musical legacy of Billie and Ella. Brown will also be leading the afternoon improvisation workshop.
The concert is a fundraiser for KEYS, a non-profit organization that provides one-on-one instrumental lessons and group music instruction to inner-city children in Bridgeport who have no other access to music instruction.
Concert tickets are $22 in advance, $27 at the door. A donation of $2 per ticket will be made directly to KEYS to support the music instruction program. Tickets are available online at www.voicescafe.org. To sign up for the afternoon workshop, contact David Vita at 203-227-7205, ext. 14.
