Registration deadline set for student volunteer program

The club, run by the department in cooperation with Westport Schools, is an after-school program for sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students to take place from Monday, Sept. 24, to Friday, Dec. 14.
The program, funded by grants from the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County, Westport Sunrise Rotary and The Westport Rotary Club, aims to give students a chance to provide community service at local nonprofit agencies while learning valuable job skills, according to a news release,
Student volunteers would work one afternoon each week from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and be given a chance to discuss their experiences at program's end.
Local participating agencies include the Center for Senior Activities; Children's Community Development Center; A Child's Place; Westport Town Clerk's Office; Westport Children's Library; Toquet Hall; Westport/Weston Family Y Aquatics; Westport/Weston Family Y Child Care; and Westport Continuing Education's Sports and Homework Club.
Registration forms are available at http://www.westportct.gov/index.aspx?page=90 and on the websites for Coleytown and Bedford middle schools. They are also be available at the Department of Human Services office in Room 200 of Town Hall.
A copy of the student's medical form must be submitted with the application. Agency placement is made based upon the student's interests and on a first-come, first-served basis.
