In a coordinated fire training drill, firefighters from Westport and Norwalk staged a joint exercise Monday designed to test readiness for a large fire on or near the shoreline.

Norwalk's fire boat -- the 38-foot "Robert Bedell" -- was deployed off the Saugatuck Shores boat launch and a large-diameter supply hose was attached.

A Westport pumper truck was then stationed 850 feet down the street.

The fire boat, which has a pumping capacity of 2,300 gallons of water per minute, "had no problem" supplying a water deed to the pumper, which can pump 1,500 gallons per minute, fire officials reported in a statement.
