Recommendations by the Compo Beach Site Improvement Committee for the beachfront park will be discussed Tuesday at a meeting planned by the Parks and Recreation Commission.

The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall auditorium.

"The commission is anxious to move forward and make recommendations to the first selectman, so that the town can implement appropriate improvements to one of Westport's most popular recreational facilities," said Charles Haberstroh, the commission chairman, in a statement announcing the forum.

The commission's discussion will be open to public comment, he said.

Some of the changes that have been proposed by the committee have proved controversial, such as the possible reconfiguration of the beach parking area. The controversial Option A would replace parking with a pedestrian walkway directly next to the beach. Option B would retain the parking beachside at South Beach as it is now configured.

The committee had also voted to eliminate the skateboard park, but lobbying by some of the town's youngest residents paid off. Members of the committee and the commission have agreed, in a nonbinding straw poll, to leave the skate park at the beach.

Haberstroh said that, to ensure there will be ample time to address the issues, the commission is requesting that speakers limit their comments to three minutes and not replicate previous comments.

The meeting will be televised on Channel 79 (Cablevision) and Channel 99 (Frontier), and will be available via video stream at www.westportct.gov.
