WESTPORT — After a town resident allegedly crashed his car, left the scene and ran from police, he was located when he called his family while officers were at his home.

Derek Mushro crashed his car on Imperial Avenue Dec. 10 around 1:30 a.m. and officers found the damaged car empty at the side of the road, according to police. Police said the resident of Waterside Terrace in Westport left the area on foot and then ran from an officer yelling for him to stop. The state police’s K-9 unit joined the search after Mushro ran into the woods.

Officers found the 24-year-old near Franklin Avenue after he called his family and told them where he was while police were at his home. Mushro, uninjured from the crash, was arrested and charged with interfering with an officer, evading responsibility, reckless driving and failure to drive in the proper lane.

His bail was set at $5,000 ahead of his Dec. 21 court date.
