WESTPORT — A Waterbury man stole more than $23,000 from a Westport business by forging his employer’s signature on more than 30 checks, police said.
The owner of the Westport-based catering company, A Dash of Salt, came to police back on May 1 to lodge a fraud complaint against his employee, 28-year-old Michael McCrorken.
The business owner told police that he had discovered digital copies of checks made out to McCrorken with a signature that were unauthorized and did not match his handwriting.
With the help of Webster Bank, police learned that McCrorken cashed in 37 fraudulent checks totaling more than $23,000 over the course of two months.
McCrorken, who was already on probation, was picked up by Westport police from his probation officer on Aug. 29 and was placed under arrest.
McCrorken was charged with 37 counts of first-degree forgery and second-degree larceny. He was released on a $25,000 bond, and he is expected in Norwalk Superior Court on Sept. 7.
