Man charged with trying to sell stolen currency

A Fairfield man was charged with larceny Tuesday after employees at Sam Sloat Coins in Westport told police he was trying to sell currency valued at between $4,000 and $6,000 that may have been stolen in Fairfield.

Alexandre Silva, 39, of Longview Avenue, was charged with two counts of third-degree larceny.

Police say the store employees matched the currency to its likeness in a flyer distributed to the store by Fairfield police. The money had apparently been taken during a burglary in Fairfield.

Westport detectives charged Silva with two counts of third-degree larceny, possession of stolen property.

Fairfield police are also investigating the incident, but had not filed charges as of Wednesday.

Minor charged with alcohol possession

An 18-year-old Westport resident was charged Monday with possession of alcohol by a minor.

Cody Ropiak, of Riverside Avenue, was charged as he walked away from his vehicle after having parked in the entranceway to Kings Highway School. When officers questioned him, they said an odor of alcohol was detected on his breath.

Ropiak allegedly admitted to have been drinking, and police said several bottles of alcoholic beverages were found in his vehicle.

It is illegal for people under 21 to possess alcohol in Connecticut.
