WESTPORT — A man and woman are accused of peddling drugs after they allegedly offered to sell an undercover officer cocaine, police said.

On Aug. 16, undercover officers were patrolling the Saugatuck area of town when they came upon two “suspicious” individuals.

The officers struck up a conversation with the individuals, during which they identified the pair as Northford residents Dean Wayton and Diana Balkun, both 29.

Police said that during the conversation Wayton offered to sell the undercover officer cocaine on the following day.

The next day, Wayton and Balkun followed through on the offer and sold the undercover officer cocaine, police said.

As the alleged drug dealers left the scene, they were pulled over by another officer on Imperial Avenue.

A drug test later revealed that the substance sold to them was not cocaine, but a similar looking powdery substance.

However, a search of Balkun during the traffic stop did reveal that she was in possession of heroin and Xanax, police said.

Wayton was charged with the sale of hallucinogen/narcotic, misrepresentation of a substance as a controlled substance and conspiracy to sell narcotics. He was unable to post the $7,500 bond, and he was arraigned in court on Friday.

Balkun was charged with the sale of a hallucinogen/narcotic, misrepresentation of a substance as a controlled substance, possession of narcotics and conspiracy to sell narcotics. She was unable to post the $10,000 bond, and she was arraigned in court on Monday.
