The house at 614 Hollow Tree Ridge Road in Darien is a contemporary box-shaped stucco building with the 1938 vintage feel created by Edward Durrell Stone, who created both the Kennedy Center and Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In the north end of town, it's situation on a pleasant lot that especially works magnificently for the two grand maple trees on either side of the entrance.

The front door is sunken at the end of a slate path. Plantings, including mountain laurels, accentuate the garden feeling of the front -- that delightful retro-Japanese flavor particular to mid-century moderns.

The vintage front door, and its nifty doorknob, lead into a large entry that's part mudroom and part living space. The floor is an unusual design of narrow dark stones, with a marble rectangular island in the middle. Crank windows look out to a large backyard, which is surrounded by woods.

To the right up several stairs is a simple but somehow exotic room with a small fireplace, with an almost invisible hearth, decorated above with a slate slab. Two sets of sliding doors lead to a back patio that's set 8 feet above the yard and fenced by a metal rail, which might be found on an old passenger liner. The view out back extends into seemingly endless woods.

A door on the south side and the porch separate the two-car garage, in between which a porthole-shaped opening in the wall looks out on the driveway, and a staircase wraps up to the second floor through an outdoor entrance.

Left of the entrance, one starts to really understand the architect's appreciation of art deco cruise ships, as the house almost feels like one in places. Short staircases are wrapped by a thick bannister and are separated by a wall of smoked glass tiles.

Up here, a majestic dining area looks over a large living room with a 20-foot-high ceiling and a western wall of windows. The living room features a fireplace as well.

Left of the dining area is a kitchen that's been recently modernized, but still has kept a design that links perfectly with the original place. The fixtures are special and tasteful, and the room is spacious and practical.

Sliding smoked glass doors off this room lead to a bathroom and a large pantry, respectively.

The southern side of the kitchen features a row of small, eye-level sliding windows that look upon the living room.

The upstairs feels large, especially with the sprawling master suite to the left. The room, which is bright with a wall of windows, is long. It's divided by two opposing closets. Another small fireplace is at the farthest end, where the door leads outside and down stairs to the garage area.

The master bath features an enormous spa tub. It's a redone room with a grand black and white swirled marble tile throughout, a separate shower and a window looking out onto the balcony.

The two bedrooms are noteworthy for a shared entrance onto the upstairs balcony.

At the living room is a wealth of additional space situated under the upper dining room. Here there's a wall of shelves and another wall that's a whole solid window looking out into a shady cove with a koi pond.

Down a side hall is another bedroom, a laundry room and a back room that's a utility space, or potential changing room. There's also a small wine cellar in the basement.
