The owners of the Colonial-style house at 27 Stonybrook Road, in the heart of Westport's Old Hill section, are in the fashion industry and their home reflects their livelihood.
Every room, every corner, every inch of this house is finished in a professional level of architectural and decorative detail as would be afforded the seams and hems and darts of a high-fashion garment that would walk a Paris runway. And while neither owner is an architect, it's safe to say they designed and created this house, transforming it from its humble original construction in 1940 to its current 13-room, 6,000 square feet of splendor.
The center hall entrance foyer has intricate dentil molding not just in the typical location where the walls and ceiling meet but also around the doors' jambs and lintels. Each step of the formal front staircase is punctuated with a decorative wooden medallion. The kitchen ceiling comprises decorative tin. But the "piece de resistance" has to be the artistic moldings of the kitchen, which once adorned a Vanderbilt home.
Coming in a close second is the ornate pale blue and white molding and carved wood detailing that decorates the deep tray ceiling and the walls of the master bedroom suite. The closet doors are accented by the equally ornate handles that are worthy of a European palace.
The current homeowners constructed a couple of additions, added a barn and a greenhouse, installed an in-ground swimming pool and built footbridges across the gently flowing brook that meanders through the 2.32-acre level property.
There is also a tennis court, and if that doesn't provide enough outdoor activity for the next owners, then Earthplace nature center is within easy walking distance -- only a couple of blocks away.
Entrance to the property is gated and the gates open to a long, pebble circular driveway, which is lined in Belgian blocks. The front door opens to a true, front-to-back, center hall. The back wall has a door with an arched transom and sidelights, all of which contain decorative leaded detailing. The arched white wood molding that frames this doorway is capped with a keystone. This door leads to the large bluestone terraced patio and into the private and peaceful backyard. The pool is surrounded by a red brick patio.
Off the foyer is a sitting room with pocket doors, a bar and a powder room with a marble floor. The sizable living room has two wide bay window areas, the second of three bars for entertaining, wood paneled walls and a red brick fireplace. The formal dining room has a bay window of its own, a decorative medallion on the ceiling and ample china and dinnerware storage hidden behind several closet doors.
The kitchen could be mistaken for a work of art. In addition to the special moldings it has a marble-topped peninsula for culinary prep work and casual meals. The counters and backsplash are covered in the marble. The glass-front cabinets are replicated in the doors of the walk-in pantry. Appliances include a five-burner Thermador range top, Bosch double wall-mounted ovens and a wine refrigerator.
The laundry room once served as staff quarters, so it is rather large and has its own full bath.
In the family room, features include a wet bar and French doors to the patio. A mudroom area has an Italian marble floor and it leads to an area that serves as a cabana for the pool. A second room in this part of the house serves as an office. There are six bedrooms on the second floor.
The house also comes with a bit of Hollywood history. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra swam in the pool and enjoyed a game of tennis there.
The house is conveniently located only five minutes from the Merritt Parkway in one direction and the same distance from I-95 and the Saugatuck train station in the other.
