There's never any denying the value of a house on Goodwives River Road in Darien.

A stone's throw from the commercial district, 5 Goodwives River Road is situated on a private piece of property that features a sweeping border of trees and a sloping hill of grass.

A pleasant, straight-forward Colonial built in 1977, it is a refreshing change from many of the modern mansion-style homes of new construction and offers a more affordable option.

In the inside hallway, stairs ascend ahead on the left.

Immediately to the left is a living room with a high ceiling, molding and a large window looking out into a picturesque front yard.

There is also a fireplace, with a slate base that blends into the pine floors.

An archway leads into a dining room, which is large and has a small chandelier and wainscoting running along the walls.

A door from here goes into the renovated kitchen, where the walls are chock full of cabinets.

The refrigerator is built-in and the counters are polished dark granite. In the center is a convenient island.

Back from the front door, two large sets of closets run along the right wall of the hall, leading into the kitchen. To the right, off the kitchen, there is an office, or which could be used as a family room, with a fireplace that looks out on a chunk of property on the west side.

From the back of the kitchen is a family space, sunken by one step down and featuring a pair of pocket doors to enable separation.

This room is centered around a unique slate-faced fireplace. A pair of half-moon windows is on either side of it.

Off to the left, next to a half bath, is a door out to a raised patio with a built-in bench around the inside perimeter of its low wall.

Upstairs, the hall is open. Starting to the immediate left is an office or library, with one wall of built-in shelves that run floor to ceiling. Fanned to the right are two bedrooms, which share a bathroom in the hallway.

To the right of the stairs, where there's a second full bathroom, there's another bedroom before entering a long hall into the master suite. (There's a convenient laundry room off of this hall.)

The master bedroom has its own small fireplace, along with lots of windows.

The bathroom has a walk-in closet with a variety of shelves.

The basement features one finished room, and there's an attached two-car garage with upstairs access.
