On the market: A custom home that’s grand and comfortable
Updated 11:44 am, Friday, September 25, 2015
The unusual house at 2 Hazelnut Road in the Coleytown section of town is an intriguing mix of a classic Nantucket shingle-and-stone home and the simple artistry of an Arts-and-Crafts Movement-influenced structure.
On the website www.architecture.about.com, the Arts-and-Crafts Movement is defined as one that “celebrated handicrafts and encouraged the use of simple forms and natural materials.” It began in England in the 1880s with the vision of several renaissance men, among them Victorian-era art and architecture critic John Ruskin, textile designer and poet William Morris and architect Philip Webb.
The house was built in 2009 by the current owners, who achieved their own vision by creating a 7,100-square-foot, three-level living space that is at once grand and casual. They would throw in the word “comfortable,” as well. The easy floor plan gives the house a natural flow and a great space that’s perfect for entertaining small gatherings as well as large groups.
It sits on a 1.11-acre level property, a corner lot along North Avenue that enjoys the convenience of being a school bus stop and commuter shuttle pick-up location. It is also fairly close to town and local train stations.

This is a pet-friendly house and it also has some handicapped-accessible features. It has 32-inch minimum doors, hallways that are 36-inch-plus wide, and hard/low nap floors. There is invisible pet fencing and the mudroom features access to a special dog room. Also found in the mudroom, which has a slate floor, is a half bath, a walk-in pantry, the command center or computer station with a built-in desk for the whole house, and access to the heated three-car attached garage.
The two-story foyer has Wainscoting on the lower walls and the hardwood floor planks are arranged in a herringbone pattern. The office or library has a bay window, custom paneling and built-in cabinetry. In the formal living room the first of the two interior fireplaces comprises quarried stone and an unusual polished marble. There are two doors to a wood deck. The second fireplace is a fieldstone fireplace in the family room. Outside, there is a third fireplace on the stone patio near the wood deck.
A tray ceiling crowns the formal dining room, and the gourmet kitchen has granite counters, a long rectangular center island, farm sink, a glass tile backsplash, eat-in area and a hardwood floor. Appliances are high end, including a Viking Professional commercial refrigerator and six-burner, gas-fueled cooktop with a quilted stainless steel backsplash behind it.
On the second floor there are six bedrooms, two of which share a Jack-and-Jill-style bath. The others are all en suite. The master bedroom is housed in a separate wing and has a vaulted ceiling, sitting area, his-and-hers walk-in closets with organizers including built-in dresser drawers and shoe racks, and sliding divided light doors to a private balcony that looks over the pool. The honed marble master spa bath has a floor arranged in a basket-weave pattern.
The spacious finished, walk-out lower level has wall-to-wall carpeting and a full bath with laundry hook-up, which would make it an ideal cabana for the pool as there are French doors that provide access to the pool area. It could also be an au pair suite.
This house also has a sewing or crafts room.
