What was built as a seasonal beach house at 2 Sherwood Drive in Westport has become a year-round residence with water views in all seasons.

The current owners decided to make the Colonial home their primary residence because they love it so much. They also love the Compo Beach area, in which the house is located, and their neighborhood in particular, but as their young family grows they need a larger home. The neighborhood has a mix of old Westport beach-style homes and new construction.

This 2,531-square-foot house was built in 1994 and was recently updated to accommodate year-round living. It sits on a 0.20 of an acre corner lot at Sherwood Drive and Burnham Hill, just a block and a half from Mill Cove Beach. The house is also within walking distance of Longshore Club Park and Compo Beach.

Its proximity to the water should not deter anyone from considering this house.

As the name implies, Burnham Hill inclines and so this house does not experience flooding and it was untouched in the recent hurricane.

"It's high up enough to avoid flooding but not so high that you lose the cozy beach feel," one of the current owners said.

Between the nearby beach and the practical backyard of this house, there are many recreational and entertainment options. The backyard features a flagstone patio, stone wall and stairs to an upper tier, wiring for sound and professional landscaping. A former owner was president of a gardening association.

While most houses close to the beach have limited storage space, and many do not have garages at all, this house has both. There is a two-car attached, under-house garage. Off the garage is a rubbish/recycling room, which can be accessed from inside or outside of the house for easy removal to the curb.

The house has a classic entry hall into the open floor plan, which includes the living room and dining room with a shared, coffered ceiling. The living room has a fireplace and French doors to the wrap-around deck/balcony, which features Brazilian wood floors.

A hallway between the dining room and gourmet kitchen houses a pantry closet with a beverage refrigerator and a half bath. The kitchen has black granite counters, glass front cabinets and high-end stainless appliances including a Viking Professional range. Sliding doors in the eat-in area lead to the patio.

On the second floor there are three bedrooms. The large master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, two ceiling fans, water views, and built-in bookshelves. It also has custom electric window shades with a black out option and the shades can be lowered from top to bottom or raised from bottom to top. The new master bath features a heated stone floor, Jacuzzi, large rectangular shower with rain heads, and a double vanity. Part of the flooring contains river rocks adding to the natural look of this space.

One of the bedrooms has a Murphy bed with a fully-lit alcove and built-in shelving. The space was used wisely throughout the house. The large walk-up attic features a cedar closet.

The new owners will benefit from plans that the current family has in place.

They have already received a variance and plans are in place to convert part of a second floor full bath into a laundry room and part of a walk-in closet into another full bath. The variance would allow for the roof line to be raised a few feet, which will slightly increase the square footage of the house.

Architectural plans have already been drawn up and paid for. There will be an Open House on Sunday (Dec. 2), from 1 to 4 p.m.

For more information or to set up an appointment to see the house, call Carole Hendrickson of William Raveis Real Estate at 203-856-1920.
