ANTHONY J. DELANO

Anthony J. Delano, 81, of Stratford, formerly of Easton and Westport, died Dec. 22, 2009, at Lord Chamberlain Health Care in Stratford.

He was born May 18, 1928, in Westport, the son of the late Joseph and Carmela (Piemonte) Delano. Raised in Westport, Delano lived in Easton for 34 years and most recently resided in Stratford.

After graduating from Staples High School in 1946, he was honored with an appointment to the USMA at West Point, where he received a bachelor of engineering degree and his Army commission in 1951. Upon graduation, Delano was assigned to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Division and served in the Korean War through 1953. He was awarded the Bronze star medal. After his discharge from the Army, he earned a masters degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. Subsequently, Delano worked in the engineering profession, where he spent the majority of his career at Bolt Associates in Norwalk, from which he retired as vice president of engineering in 1986.

Delano remained active in the West Point Association of Graduates, giving generously of his time and resources. He was a 37-year member of American Legion Post 0160, a long-time member of the Unitarian Church in Westport and belonged to the Connecticut Classic Arts organization in Trumbull. He will also be remembered as an avid gardener and voracious reader, with a renowned passion for art.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Monchamp Delano of Stratford; one brother, William Delano of Westport; two sisters, Mary Delano of Coral Gables, Fla., and Ann Carissimi of Fairfield; a brother-in-law, Vincent Carissimi; and three nephews, Louis, Vincent and John Carissimi.

Delano was predeceased by one sister, Rachel Newman.

A memorial service will be announced in the future. Memorial contributions in memory of Delano may be made to Homes with Hope (Interfaith Housing Association), 49 Richmondville Ave., Suite 112, Westport, CT 06880. The Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road E., Westport, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
