Westport Public Library has named Jerry A. Tishman as the newest member of its Advisory Council, charged with soliciting community insight and expertise to help the library define and meet its goals.

Tishman, of Westport, graduated from Columbia Grammar Preparatory School in New York City in 1941 and then entered the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in the class of 1945, according to a library news release. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Wyman in the Pacific Theatre, earning battle stars for invasions at Eniwetok, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

After the war, he traveled through South America and spent several years in France, Italy and England. He returned to New York in 1954 and began one of Merrill Lynch Fenner & Smith's first executive training programs.

He worked at the firm's main office until 1969, when he bought a seat to become an individual member of the New York Stock Exchange, where he remained for over 36 years. His work in finance spanned 51 years, the release states.
