WESTPORT — A New London man was charged with drug possession in Westport after police found him allegedly asleep behind the wheel of his car while clutching drugs.

Officers were called to Post Road West and Cross Street on the afternoon of June 16 and found Allan Jones passed out behind the wheel of his car with his foot on the brake pedal and car running, police said.

Officers reported he was clutching a cigarette of crack cocaine in his hand and that a further search of his car allegedly revealed a bag of white pills and a crack pipe. Jones, of Green Street in New London, also had a suspended license, could not show proof of insurance and was driving a car whose registration had expired, according to police.

Police arrested and charged Jones with possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of narcotics not in their original container, operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license, insufficient insurance and operation of an unregistered motor vehicle. The 45-year-old was also charged with two counts of second-degree failure to appear for warrants out of New London.

Jones has a June 30 court date for the Westport charges.
