The Staples girls soccer team lost 3-0 at New Canaan Saturday and dropped to 6-5-2.

With the loss, Staples is in ninth place in the FCIAC standings and trails eighth-place Trumbull by three points. A win counts for three points and a tie counts for one point in the standings and the top eight teams make the FCIAC playoffs.

New Canaan raised its record to 10-2-2 and took advantage of its early chances. Lady Wrecker goalie Jessie Ambrose made a few nice saves on corner kicks but the Lady Rams scored off a corner to take a 1-0 lead. They scored their next two goals on free kicks, one in which Ambrose made the initial save on.

Staples had its chances when senior captains Abbey Lake and Abby Fagan set up Turner Block for some golden opportunities but New Canaan's keeper made the saves on Block.

Freshman Mary Bennewitz made her varsity debut and relieved Ambrose in the second half.
