Glitz and a good cause combined for a glamorous night of giving Friday at the Near & Far Aid Spring Gala at Mitchell's of Westport.

The annual fundraiser organized by the Southport-based charity supports its mission to help end poverty -- in all its ramifications -- throughout Fairfield County.

The gala over the past 14 years has donated $14 million to various programs advancing that cause.

The year's event coincided with the 60th anniversary of the founding of Near & Far Aid. The organization was started by a small group of women as a kitchen-table charity to assist those at home and abroad whose lives had been devastated by World War II.

In recent years, Near & Far Aid has awarded a total of about $1 million annually to more than 100 nonprofit organizations that help children, families and individuals.

The gala featured unique silent auction items, cocktails, food treats and a live auction.
