Near & Far Aid has announced that it distributed $978,000 to 90 non-profit agencies targeting poverty in Fairfield County over the last year. The announcement was made Sept. 10 at a celebration at Pequot Library.

The organization's fiscal year closed on Aug. 31 and Vice President and Projects Review Chairwoman Bitsy Higgins announced a successful year for Near& Far Aid with a net operating income over $1 million, a milestone not surpassed since the 2008 economic downturn.

Artist Miggs Burroughs of Westport was awarded the Jeannie Fay Award, to a volunteer who, without previous formal recognition, has volunteered selflessly for at least 10 years and demonstrated outstanding dedication to the work of the organization. Burroughs was recognized for his volunteer work with many local charities and assisting with audio visual production on near & Far Aid events for many years.

The Community Compassion Award was given to Porsche of Fairfield and the Stamford-based Harman International.

At the recent event, the president's gavel was passed from Westport resident Jeanne Burris to Higgins.
