A New York man and woman were captured Thursday night as they tried to flee with more than $3,000 worth of merchandise from the Anthropologie store on Post Road East, police said.

The alleged shoplifting incident was reported to police shortly after 7 p.m. by store employees, who said the pair had fled from the store with merchandise they did not pay for.

Officers, with assistance from Fairfield police, began searching for the suspects along the Post Road East corridor.

The man — later identified as Miguel Pinzon, 29, of Queens, N.Y. — was taken into custody by Officer Rich Allen on the Post Road.

The woman — identified as Martha Suarez, 28, of Corona, N.Y. — was found hiding in bushes near a Post Road East gas station about a half-hour later by Officer James Loomer and his K-9 Koda.

The merchandise was recovered in the area where police said it was dropped as the pair fled, and the suspects were taken into custody after being identified by store employees.

Both are scheduled to appear July 6 at state Superior Court in Norwalk.
