The Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams finished 17th and 14th at the NCAA Div. II National Championships in Canton, Ohio, last weekend. From the men's team, Piotr Safronczyk won the school's first-ever national swimming title with a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Three individual swimmers--Safronczyk, Alena Gorlanova and Sandra Schmitz--and the women's 400 medley relay team (Gorlanova, Schmitz, Anna Kwiatowska and Roxana Purcelea) each earned All-America honors, while Safronczyk, Gorlanova, Anna Krasnowska, Kwiatkowska, Purcelea, Schmitz, Maris Visse, Julio Lopez, Eddie Phillips, Nikola Savic and Toni Valcic each also earned at least one Honorable Mention All-America citation. ... UB senior Luke Abraham has been selected the ECC Baseball Player of the Week after going 5-for-12 at the plate with six RBI. ... Quinnipiac's Devon Gibney and Kaitlyn Kelly earned NEC Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, in women's lacrosse after leading the Bobcats in a 1-1 week. ... In softball, Quinnipiac's Heather Schwartzburg was named Akadema/NEC Pitcher of the Week, throwing three complete games for the Bobcats. ... Fairfield's Joseph Marra, Kevin Peters and Matt Callahan earned ECAC weekly honors in men's lacrosse. Marra was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week and also NEILA Player of the Week, while Peters and Callahan were named to the ECAC weekly Honor Roll. ... In women's lacrosse, Fairfield's Erin Rigby and Chloe Magnan were named MAAC Offensiver Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Rigby had 11 points and Magnan had five points as the Stags went 1-1 last week. ... Bridgeport's Luke Abraham was named ECC Player of the Week in baseball, after going 5-for-12 with six RBIs in three wins for the Purple Knights.
