Fire that erupted in a car traveling north on Interstate 95 triggered extensive delays in Thursday night traffic at the Westport-Fairfield border.

The Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received the first report of the car fire, just south of I-95's northbound Exit 19, shortly after 7:15 p.m.

Firefighters in both Fairfield and Westport were dispatched to the scene, where flames and heavy smoke were billowing from a white Mercedes sedan.

Westport fire crews, heading north on I-95, arrived first and confirmed reports that a single vehicle was on fire in the highway's right shoulder. They were assisted by Fairfield firefighters who arrived shortly, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

No injuries were reported.

The heavily damaged Mercedes had to be towed from the scene.

State Police said the incident caused a lengthy backup in northbound traffic.
