Last Saturday the Westport Parks and Recreation Department sponsored the sixth race of the 2016 Road Runners Program with a 5.85 mile run starting at Compo Beach. Despite hot and humid conditions Luke McCambley continued his winning ways and won his fifth straight Road Runners race of the season, and his third straight 5.85 mile race, as he led 147 runners over the scenic and certified course with the time of 32:50.
McCambley’s time, however, was well off the course record of 29:33 set by Roy Mascolino, of Westport, in 1986. The first woman to finish was Cate Allen, of Fairfield in 16th place with the time of 39:33. Allen’s time was also short of the women’s course record of 34:45 set by Alison Quelch, of Ansonia, in 1985.
Second and third places in the men’s division in Saturday’s race were awarded to fellow Westporters Zak Ahmad and Daniel Landy with respective times of 33:23 and 35:14. Second and third places in the women’s division were awarded to Emily Lewson, of Ridgefield, in 36th place and Jessica Polcer in 41st place with respective times of 44:32 and 45:12. Paul Greenberg finished seventh in 37:43.
The next scheduled Road Runners race will be held on Saturday, August 13 at 8 a.m. with a 6.85 mile run starting at Compo Beach. The fee for the program is $30 for Westport residents and $60 for non-residents. In addition, participants have the option of paying a weekly fee of $5 (resident) or $10 (non-resident).
