First Selectman Jim Marpe brought his "best friend" to work with him Monday.

It was Marpe's Bernese mountain dog, Madison, who accompanied the first selectman to the Town Clerk's office to get his dog license renewed.

Dog licenses must be renewed annually before July 1.

Taking Madison to Town Clerk Patty Strauss' office to be issued his new license was Marpe's way of reminding all dog owners in town to do the same.

Strauss said dog license renewals may be obtained from her office, Room 105 in Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave, from Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A certificate showing that the animal is current on rabies vaccinations also must be presented to be issued a license.

Licenses can also be obtained by mailing payment and required certification, (all certificates will be returned with license), along with a self-addressed stamped return envelope to: Westport Town Clerk, P.O. Box 549, Westport, CT 06881.

All dogs older than 6 months must be licensed, she said.

Fees for dog licenses are: $8 for neutered male or spayed female and $19 for male or female. There will be a $1 penalty per month for licenses issued after June 30.
