MILFORD -- A 47 year-old man was rescued from Long Island Sound after his kayak overturned Wednesday night.

The man had been in the 63-degree water for some time and was shaking and complaining of leg cramps when he was found, officials said. He was not wearing a life jacket. The kayaker, who was not identified, was brought to Milford Hospital.

The man told members of the Milford police department's Marine Unit that he had launched the kayak from Gulf Beach but that a large wave had caused it to overturn. Police and fire department boats were dispatched at about 5:40 p.m. after a person reported a boater in distress near Charles Island.
