A Bridgeport man was charged Thursday with stealing paint brushes from Westport Hardware on Post Road East.

Robert H. Ortowski, 38, of William Street in Bridgeport was charged with sixth-degree larceny, criminal impersonation and interfering with a police officer.

Police said Ortowski took the paint brushes and then fled the store on foot. He was located a short distance away by officers and placed under arrest, according to a police report.

"During the booking process Ortowski provided his brother's name and demographic information," the report states. "However his fingerprints provided his true identity to officers."

Once his identity was determined further computer checks showed that he had three outstanding re-arrest warrants for violation of probation and a felony arrest warrant from the Milford Police Department, the report said.

Ortowski was held on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Sept. 2 in Norwalk Superior Court.
