Man charged after altercation with cop at First Night event

Richard Weizel, 57, of Milford, was charged Monday night during a "First Night" New Year's Eve event downtown after he reportedly got into an physical altercation with a police officer and a fire inspector.
Weizel forced his way into one of the events, police said, and then refused to leave after initially being denied entry. He pushed an officer, causing him to fall to the ground and began fighting with the officer, police said. The brawl then engulfed a fire inspector at the event, who had come over to assist the officer, police said. After a "brief struggle," police said, Weizel was taken into custody.
Weizel was charged with breach of peace, first-degree criminal trespass, interfering with an officer and assaulting public safety/emergency medical personnel. He was released on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Jan. 10 in Norwalk Superior Court.
